Anderlecht drew 0-0 on Sunday at Union SG. With a draw, neither club will make much progress, leaving Club Brugge alone in the lead.
The 0-0 draw between Anderlecht and Union SG provided little pleasure for former national coach René Vandereycken. “I have to say that I didn’t really enjoy this match,” he begins at Het Nieuwsblad.
“In terms of tension and intensity, it was a typical play-off match, but from a football technical point of view the level was not high enough. This of course also has to do with the fact that a lot is at stake. I heard a player in the comments after the match say from each team that he felt he could win the match, and that is true: they both had chances. That is why I think a draw is a fair result.”
Vandereycken also wants to say something about the level of the referee. He believes that ref Bram Van Driessche did not handle the match well.
“The fact that the match was so intense also had to do with the referee. However, I had told my wife during the match that I did not want to make a point about the arbitration, but in my opinion the ref was in the game – fortunately not on decisive moments – made too many mistakes, so that players sometimes no longer knew what was allowed and what was not.”
“He also gave the two trainers a yellow card and the one for Brian Riemer was certainly justified. Riemer likes to be the sportsman, but by kicking that ball onto the field he showed a little side of himself. Even if I did. I would do anything to win myself and I might have done the same,” Vandereycken concludes.
