Schiavone, the founder and former godfather of the Casalesi clan, which operates in the province of Caserta, not far from Naples, wants to cooperate with the prosecution as a key witness.
Francesco ‘Sandokan’ Schiavone, who is now 70 years old, is said to have started the first talks with the authorities a few weeks ago. Since being sentenced to life in prison for several murders under the strict prison conditions for mafia bosses and terrorists, Schiavone has remained silent. Researchers now hope to gain detailed insights into the clan’s activities, as well as possible links between the Camorra and politics.

Two of his sons already decided to cooperate with the authorities in 2018 and 2021. Two other sons of Schiavone are in prison. A few days ago, police offered Schiavone’s relatives who are not in custody the opportunity to participate in a protection program, Ansa and Adnkronos said.
The Camorra, one of the most notorious Italian mafia organizations, is based in the southern Italian provinces of Naples and Caserta and operates worldwide. She became known through the book ‘Gomorrah’ by journalist Roberto Saviano, which was later made into a film. Since its publication in 2006, Saviano has received death threats and has been under police protection. In ‘Gomorrah’ Saviano also talks about the activities of Francesco Schiavone.
