A twelve-year-old student has been killed in a school shooting in Finland. Two others of the same age were seriously injured, police said. A twelve-year-old suspect tried to flee on foot, but he was captured. The young teen made a confession.

The Viertola primary school is located in Vantaa, about 15 kilometers from the capital Helsinki. The perpetrator also took lessons there. The shooting reportedly took place in a classroom. According to police, the victim died immediately on the spot.
The shooter’s motive is still unclear. According to police, the child had a handgun for which a family member had a permit. All victims reportedly suffered gunshot wounds.
The police say they suspect murder and attempted murder. There are currently no other suspects in the picture.
Some children anxiously called their parents to tell them what had happened. The police called on passers-by to avoid the area, and local residents were asked not to open their doors to strangers.
According to a witness, the perpetrator was wearing a hood. The children were kept in the classrooms, their parents came en masse to the school. There they were received by officers.
The school accommodates approximately 800 students between the ages of 7 and 15. Heavily armed police officers stood guard after the tragedy.
The case led to shocked reactions in Finland. Prime Minister Petteri Orpo and Interior Minister Mari Rantanen expressed their horror at the shooting.
Finland was also shocked by deadly school shootings in 2007 and 2008. Hundreds of thousands of residents have a firearms permit, and hunting is a popular activity. Weapons legislation was tightened in 2010.
