A bus has plunged off a bridge in South Africa, killing at least 45 passengers. This is reported by the Ministry of Transport.

The accident happened in the northeastern province of Limpopo, near a mountain pass. The bus driver lost control for reasons that are still unclear, after which the bus fell 50 meters and caught fire.

According to the Ministry of Transport, the bus was en route from Botswana to Moria, in the north of South Africa. There were a total of 46 people on the bus, of whom 45 died. The only survivor is an eight-year-old boy, who was seriously injured and is currently in hospital.

“Some bodies have been burned beyond recognition, others are trapped under the rubble and still others are scattered around the accident site,” the ministry said in a statement.

South Africa has one of the most developed road networks on the continent, but is one of the worst performing countries when it comes to road safety.
