Sir Jim Ratcliffe has expressed surprise at the poor facilities at Manchester United. The club’s co-owner was given a tour of the stadium and the training complex, but afterwards sent an angry email to the staff.

The email came into the hands of various English media, such as The Athletic and The Guardian. After two days of walking around the club, Ratcliffe felt it necessary to raise the alarm with Manchester United staff. ‘I had a nice tour of some of the facilities within the club. But I have also encountered a lot of places there where there is a high level of negligence.’

‘The IT department in particular was a real disgrace, but the Under-18s and Under-21s changing rooms were not much better.’ The boss of chemical giant Ineos states that their facilities are in much better order. ‘These standards would not even come close to what we expect at INEOS. And we are a chemical company, while Manchester United is a top sports organization.’

That’s why Ratcliffe calls for action. ‘If an organization does not have standards and discipline, it will never succeed. I would be grateful if we can aim for the right standards in the future. It has a bad impact on the club if we show visitors, parents of young players, new players and the media that we don’t care enough whether we have got things in order or not.’

At an earlier stage, Ratcliffe already indicated that he was committed to a new stadium for Manchester United, as Old Trafford football temple is quite dated.
