NEW DELHI: The Taiwanese ministry of defense (MND) reported that between 6 am on Saturday and 6 am on Sunday (local time), seven Chinese military aircraft and five naval vessels were observed operating in the vicinity of Taiwan. One of the seven Chinese military aircraft breached the median line of the Taiwan Strait and entered Taiwan’s Southwest Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ).

In response to the Chinese activity, Taiwanese armed forces closely monitored the situation and deployed combat patrol aircraft, naval vessels, and coastal missile systems, as per the MND’s statement.

On Saturday, Taiwan’s ministry of national defense said nine Chinese military aircraft and five naval vessels were detected operating around the nation from 6 am (local time) on Friday to 6 am (local time) on Saturday. Taiwan monitored the situation and deployed combat patrol aircraft, naval vessels, and coastal missile systems, according to the MND’s statement.

According to Taiwan News, as of Saturday, Taiwan had detected Chinese military aircraft 39 times and naval vessels 21 times in May alone. Since September 2020, China has escalated its use of “gray zone tactics” by deploying more military aircraft and naval ships near Taiwan. The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) defines gray zone tactics as “an effort or series of efforts beyond steady-state deterrence and assurance that attempts to achieve one’s security objectives without resorting to direct and sizable use of force.”
