Even after 6 match days, Standard still has to wait for a first three-pointer in the play-offs. The Rouches had to share the spoils with STVV on Saturday evening, after a 1-1 draw.

STVV is clinical, Standard is easy

There is little at stake for both Standard and STVV this season. A moment of loss of concentration quickly happened.

After just two minutes, Yeboah was almost able to take advantage of sloppy defending. Van Helden gave back too weakly to Suzuki. He kicked right into the rush. The rebound bounced just wide.

There were a lot fewer sloppy things afterwards, and STVV also started to play nice football at times.

A clever attack over many stations ended up at Ogawa around the fifteen minute mark. The Japanese shot the ball past debutant Epolo in two attempts.

The lead was a fact and the Limburgers retreated to their own half. However, an easy Standard did not get much further than a few chances.

The fact that Djenepo was taken off before half-time was indicative.

Day and night

We don’t know what Ivan Leko said during the break. But it was immediately clear that it had an effect. Standard started the second period like crazy.

Each time the danger came from the flanks, via Panzo or Price. STVV got away very well when Van Helden saw a sharp cross bounce through his leg onto the post, and not into his own goal.

But around the hour mark the deserved equalizer was finally achieved. Panzo was completely alone at a corner kick and was able to easily score the 1-1 goal.

The pace then disappeared somewhat from the match, until it crescendoed again in the last minute.

Sclessin jumped up when referee Boterberg gave a penalty for a handball by Janssens. But a minute later the VAR (correctly) reversed the decision due to a pushing error by Kanga.

So no victory at the last minute. Standard remains without a win in the Play-offs.

Phase by phase

END: 1-1

End of the match. No penalty and therefore no winner. Standard remains without a win in the Play-offs. STVV makes peace with the division of points.

No penalty!

While Yeboah and Kanga argue about who gets to take the penalty, Boterberg goes to the screen. Result: pushing error on Janssens. The decision is reversed.

Penalty!

There was still a chance! Canak throws a cross into the box. Wolke Janssens jumps into the game and hits the ball with his arm. Penalty!

Not a shot, but a cross. Smets can easily relieve.

4 – extra time

An extra 4 minutes will be added.

Standard scores another free kick in an interesting spot, about five meters outside the sixteen.

Will another winning goal fall from the sky? It doesn’t seem like it for now. With this score, Standard equals a club record: five matches in a row.

Substitute Canak is also looking forward to it. With a flashy dribble he puts Vanwesemael on the wrong foot. His shot is a lot less and ends up in a bunch of legs.

Ito tries again. This time substitute Fossey throws himself in front of the ball.

There was STVV again. Ito squeezes past a defender on the edge of the box and is able to take a swing while stumbling. Not a bad attempt, but narrowly wide.

A 45 second raid

Substitute Steuckers gets the ball for the first time and advances. Panzo converts into a corner, but the Belgian remains on the ground afterwards. Immediately game over. The attacker clearly landed badly and had to be helped off the field.

1-1!

There is the deserved equalizer! Panzo is completely free and heads a great corner kick from Kawabe past Suzuki.

Panzo and Price regularly send dangerous crosses into the back of the defense. The difference with the Standard before the break is night and day.

An amusing opening phase in the second half, with many shots towards Suzuki’s cage.

Ogawa kicks a hard cross into the box. Bertaccini seems a bit surprised and heads too much towards the ground. It should have been in the frame.

And again two chances for Standard. For the time being, STVV is holding its own.

There was almost the lid on the nose. Epolo has to fire a long shot and sees how Bertaccini cannot frame the ball afterwards. A brief electric shock through Sclessin.

STVV gets away well

There’s Standard again on the left! This time the equalizer seems to be a fact, but strangely enough the ball bounces off the post via Van Helden’s knee!

We are ten seconds in and there is the best chance of the match for Standard. A sharp cross is just missed by Sowah. Price cannot get past Suzuki on the rebound either.

Halftime: 0-1

We’re going to rest. Standard has done its best to make something of it, but the lead for STVV is not illogical. Curious to see what the home team can do after the break.

With peace in sight, STVV arrives again. Bertaccini reaches the back line and crosses. Ito tries with a shot, but cannot threaten Epolo.

5 – extra time

An extra 5 minutes will be added.

(still) no card for Smets

Matte Smets arrives too late and seems to hit Sowah slightly. Boterberg keeps his cards in his pocket. The young defender has never picked up a card in his professional career (53 games).

Djenepo can now rest

Strange decision. Leko intervenes before the break and takes Djenepo to the side. Balikwisha must bring improvement.

Delorge drops his foot and takes yellow. The young Belgian will miss the match against Westerlo on Friday.

Standard is now clearly the best team. STVV withdraws.

Stef Wijnants

Suzuki is having a bit of a hard time.

It must be said: after that first chance and first goal, things have been a bit slow at STVV for a while now. Standard is currently unable to convert their ball possession into real opportunities.

Suzuki is back on the mat with a bit of pain, but can continue again. Second goalkeeper Coppens has already tied his laces.

Yeboah heads over

Panzo sends a great cross into the box. Yeboah can head freely, but cannot keep the ball low. Best Liège attack of the match.

The home team presses the accelerator. STVV has to go back a bit, but is holding its ground for the time being. Sahabo then tries it with a wild long shot.

It can be done with tape, new shoes and a grimace. But Suzuki will remain under the bar for the time being.

Suzuki

Goalkeeper Suzuki demands a leading role. After a minute and a half he was so close to making it 1-0, but now he seems to have injured himself. The Japanese had to scramble to throw a pass that was too short forward.

The STVV players are allowed to celebrate early in the match.

There’s the 0-1!

Great goal from the Truienaars! The attack starts with goalkeeper Suzuki and ends up at Ogawa after many stops. He gets the ball past Epolo in two times.

For the time being, Djenepo must limit himself to defending. The Malian already gave away two corner kicks.

For the time being, the match is finding it difficult to shake off the ‘fin de saison’ feeling. Standard only plays for its own supporters. They have not been able to beat STVV at home since 2018. Still a statistic that you would like to put an end to.

A first attack by STVV. The Limburgers force a corner kick, but it doesn’t buy anything.

Just not a blunder

Almost a case of Moris! Van Helden plays far too short on Suzuki. The goalkeeper kicks the ball hard into the middle of Yeboah. The rebound bounces just wide.

Counted out or not, Sclessin is still quite full tonight. Does it inspire the team to fire again?

We’ll start in five minutes.

We want to give opportunities to young players. Bodart’s injury is the ideal opportunity to give Epolo a chance. He played a strong season at SL16 in the second division.

Ivan Leko (coach Standard)

We didn’t have an easy time against Standard in the first leg. We’re going to do everything we can to win today.

Thorsten Fink (trainer STVV)

The position of STVV. Van Helden is back from injury and comes into the team for Godeau. Ogawa, Barnes and Bertaccini replace Bocat, Steuckers and Koita.

The home team’s eleven. Ivan Leko gives the young promising goalkeeper Epolo his debut. Sowah also appears in the base for the first time since February.

Regular number 1 Bodart is struggling with a minor injury.
