The Windows 10 Extended Security Update program will be available from October 2024. Customers who want to purchase a license must pay $61 per device for the first year. The program runs for three years and the license price increases by $61 each year.

Microsoft provides three ways for customers to enroll in the Windows 10 Extended Security Update program. The company first mentions a method where users can purchase a license for individual Windows 10 devices. A license costs $61 per device for the first year. The price of a second year license will be $122 per Windows 10 device, according to Microsoft. The price of a license for the third year is 183 euros. Companies that only want to sign up from the second or third year must also pay the license costs of the previous year or years.

The Windows 10 Extended Security Update program will also be available to Windows 365 business customers using their Windows 10 devices to stream Windows 11 from the cloud. According to Microsoft, these users will be able to download the updates free of charge. Customers who use Microsoft’s own management tools, such as Microsoft Intune or Windows Autopatch, will also be able to rely on the Windows 10 Extended Security Update program. They will be able to download the security updates via the management tools and will receive a discount, according to the company.

Microsoft mentions that the paid security updates for Windows 10 are not a long-term solution, but rather a transitional measure. The updates contain no new features and no other changes or bug fixes, except for security vulnerabilities. According to Microsoft, the Windows 10 Extended Security Update program should mainly help customers make the transition to Windows 11 more comfortable. Microsoft will end support for Windows 10 in October 2025. That’s just over a decade after the release of the operating system and about four years after the release of Windows 11.
