Comparison site Huisdierverzekeren.nl looked at the prices of three common treatments, namely: a consultation, sterilization of a cat and castration of a dog. They examined 150 veterinarians throughout the country. What seems? The rates vary considerably.

Considerably more expensive

A fifteen-minute veterinary consultation costs on average €48.43, but it can also be €32 or €63, depending on the practice you choose. Neutering an 8-kilo dog costs an average of €222.18, with peaks of €340 upwards, or €135 downwards. In 2023, pet owners paid 9 percent less for these standard procedures and consultations.

Abroad

“Everything is becoming more expensive. But in some cases the price increases and differences are significant. This probably has to do with the takeover of veterinary practices by larger parties, sometimes from abroad,” explains researcher Wiep Knol in the A.D.

follow your feelings

It is therefore certainly worthwhile to compare the prices of veterinary practices, says Knol. Still, she recommends not just thinking about your wallet. “Just looking at the price is not a good idea. Look at the reviews online and perhaps have a conversation with an assistant to see how the practice comes across. It’s not just about the rates, it’s also about the feeling.”
