Israel is outraged by the UN Security Council’s call for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has canceled his planned visit to Washington at the last minute.

Netanyahu calls the United States’ action a “clear withdrawal.”

The UN Security Council issued a resolution on Monday calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza during Ramadan. The council also called for the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages in Gaza.

The United States abstained from voting because the country did not agree with everything. For example, the resolution did not contain a condemnation of Hamas, which the US would have liked to see. But the US also did not use its veto, allowing the Security Council to call for a pause in fighting. It’s the first time that happened.

Netanyahu does not thank Washington for the fact that the US did not use its veto power. The US is Israel’s most important ally. According to Israel, the US attitude is harmful to Israel’s fight against Hamas and to an attempt to free hostages. It gives Hamas hope that international pressure will make a ceasefire possible without “the release of our abductees,” the Israeli prime minister believes.

White House disappointed with Israel’s cancellation

The White House reacted with disappointment to Israel’s cancellation. “We are very disappointed that they will not come to Washington and have a comprehensive discussion with us about viable alternatives to their intervention in Rafah,” White House spokesman John Kirby said.

An Israeli delegation would travel to Washington to discuss Israel’s planned and controversial operation in Rafah. The American authorities say that they still want to talk to Israel. Kirby emphasizes that the US position on Gaza remains unchanged, despite the abstention from the Security Council vote.
