Apple is introducing a new generation of its iPad Pro with a double-layer OLED screen. The device includes a new Pencil Pro with a pinch sensor and built-in haptic feedback. Apple is also releasing a new iPad Air with a larger 13″ screen.

According to Apple, the new iPad Pro is the thinnest Apple device ever. The version with an 11″ display has a thickness of 5.3mm, while the 13″ tablet is only 5.1mm thick. The housing is made of recycled aluminum. The ‘Tandem OLED display’ of both sizes of iPad Pro (2024) consists of two OLED panels that are stacked on top of each other, which should improve the brightness. Apple promises a maximum full-screen brightness of 1000cd/m² for both SDR and HDR material; the peak brightness for HDR is 1600cd/m², the same as the previous generation iPad Pro with 12.9″ mini LED screen. For the first time, the iPad Pro is also available with a matte display with a nano texture. That costs an extra 130 euros and is only possible for versions with 1TB or 2TB storage.

The iPad Pro (2024) has a new M4 socket. It is manufactured using a second-generation 3nm process. The CPU section has four fast and six slower, efficient cores, two more than the M2 in the iPad Pro (2022). The 10-core GPU contains the same improvements as those in the M3, such as Mesh Shading and hardware ray tracing, which should offer up to four times the performance of the M2. The Neural Engine for AI computation could deliver 38 trillion operations per second. The whole thing is cooled with graphite and copper behind the Apple logo.

As with the iPad (2022), the 12MP front camera is located on the long side. The iPad Pro (2024) also houses the Face ID hardware for facial recognition. The Pro iPad again has a 12MP rear camera with Lidar scanner, but no ultra-wide-angle camera, like the 2022 model. The new True Tone flash enables a new document scanning feature that automatically removes shadows.

The new Magic Keyboard has a row of function keys and a larger touchpad with haptic feedback. The palm rest is made of aluminum. The updated Apple Pencil Pro has a squeeze sensor, which allows you to change brush or line thickness by squeezing the pen. The pen gives a tap to confirm. A built-in gyroscope lets you adjust the brush stroke by rotating the pen. The Pencil Pro is tilt and pressure sensitive, just like the ‘regular’ second-generation Pencil. The Hover function, with which the iPad Pro recognizes the pen when the pen hovers above the screen, is also still supported.

The iPad Pro (2024) will be available in storage capacities of 256GB, 512GB, 1TB or 2TB, and with a silver or dark gray casing. The 11″ iPad Pro is available from 1219 euros for the WiFi-only model, while a 5G variant costs from 1469 euros. The 13″ version has starting prices of 1569 and 1819 euros for the WiFi and 5G versions respectively. The Pencil Pro costs 149 euros, the Magic Keyboard costs 349 euros or 399 euros, depending on the size.

New iPad Air

The new iPad Air will be available for the first time in two sizes: 11″ and 13″. Both have an LCD screen. The iPad Air with a 13″ screen would offer the same image quality as the 11″ model, but with 30 percent more screen space. This means that the larger model of the new Air does not have the mini LED screen suitable for HDR display, like the larger iPad Pro (2022).

As with the iPad Pro (2024), the front camera of the new iPad Air has been moved to the long side; Instead of Face ID, this tablet has a fingerprint sensor in the power button. Compared to the smaller version, the 13″ model would have more powerful speakers with more bass. The M2 SoC could make the iPad Air (2024) up to two times faster than the older model, which was equipped with an M1. The iPad Air (2024) has support for both the second-generation Apple Pencil and the Pencil Pro. Like the iPad Pro, the iPad Air (2024) can recognize both pens when they float above the screen, which the old Air could not.

The iPad Air (2024) will be available in storage capacities of 128GB, 256GB, 512GB and 1TB. The last two are new. The starting price of the 11″ model is 719 euros for a WiFi-only version, while the 13″ tablet costs from 969 euros. The iPad Air will also be available from May 15.
