At the end of this month, Calicos can already blow out three candles for its debut The Soft Landing. And what better way to celebrate than with a new album? On November 22 we will hear new material from the people of Antwerp. They will keep the title of the album to themselves for a while, but they already showed that the Americana six-piece is ready for a new musical era last year with “Comedown”, “Reliving” and “The Siren”. The icing on the cake is the fresh single “In Motion”, which already tastes sweet.
With her previous work, Calicos was often reminiscent of The War On Drugs or Kurt Vile and that is no different this time. Even though we never heard “In Motion” before, it still sounds nostalgic in some way. A strumming, acoustic guitar tune that sounds extremely subtle at times, is accompanied by a gracious, graceful piano melody. As usual, the relaxed, warm voice of lead singer Quinten Vermaelen completely captivates us. Due to the flexibility in his vocal range, he even does this with a bow on top. About halfway through the guitars get their opportunity to steal the show. Meanwhile, the piano cheers up with its sunny, sonic rays. A climax is built up when the tempo slowly becomes more intense and the drums also experience the impact of this by steadily increasing. This results in an instrumental spectacle that takes your breath away, while the atmosphere of the song completely changes. Just when we thought it wouldn’t get any better, Vermaelen adds an extra vocal impression. It keeps repeating the same sentence, but does so in a powerful way that shows how sincerely he wants to convey his message. Once again Calicos manages to pleasantly surprise us, which means that the waiting time for the new album to arrive is gradually making us impatient.
We can expect Calicos’ new album on November 22. The band will perform a series of shows in the fall to introduce this. The first of these will be on November 29 in Music Club 4AD in Diksmuide. On December 2 you can see the six at work in Het Depot in Leuven. On December 6, it is not Sinterklaas, but Calicos who will give a concert in the Hasselt Café Café. Then her steamboat moves forward at full speed. In the second week of December you can go to Charlatan in Ghent on December 11, De Casino in Sint-Niklaas on December 12 and the Antwerp Trix on December 13. Afterwards, Calicos will come to Deux Ours and the Ancienne Belgique at the weekend. In addition, the band will also visit the Netherlands during its tour, the concert dates of which will be announced later.
