Google Pixel 8a price has been leaked
Android enthusiasts have been looking forward to the Google Pixel 8a, Google’s new budget device, for some time now. However, it doesn’t seem like the phone will be very cheap. According to information from Dealabswhich often shares the suggested retail prices of unannounced Android phones (and has regularly been right), the Pixel 8a will be more expensive than its predecessor.
The entry-level version of the Google Pixel 8a costs according to the source 549 euros. This concerns a device with 128GB of storage space, where the price will increase by a few tens of euros. For comparison: the Pixel 7a was launched last year for 509 euros. This makes the 8a cheaper on paper than the regular Pixel 8, although this smartphone has dropped significantly in price since its release.
What is new is that Google is also launching a 256GB variant of its ‘budget device’ this year. That costs according to rumor 609 euros. Only a 128GB model of the Pixel 7a was released, without the option to expand the storage yourself with a micro SD card. If you need extra storage, 256GB may be an interesting option.
Google would start selling the Pixel 8a on Tuesday, May 7. That is striking, because exactly one week later, Google I/O 2024 will take place. Previous Pixel a phones were unveiled during this developer conference. The search giant would therefore choose to release the Pixel 8a precisely during I/O this year. By the way, the official covers, which come in different colors, reportedly cost 34.99 euros.
What else we know about the Pixel 8a
Thanks to all the rumors, we know a lot about the Pixel 8a. In fact, it seems that Google has little new to say during the official unveiling. The smartphone gets a new design, with a housing with rounded corners. The Pixel 7a, on the other hand, looks more angular. The characteristic camera bar on the back, which has been on Pixel phones for years, returns.
In addition, the Pixel 8a has a Tensor G3 processor, which we know from the more expensive Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro. This processor is faster and more energy efficient than the Tensor G2 of the Pixel 7a. Furthermore, the compact 6.1-inch screen is said to have a higher refresh rate of 120Hz, making images appear slightly smoother.
Unfortunately, the charging speed remains the same. This means that the Pixel 8a fast charges with a maximum of 18 watts, and wirelessly replenishes the battery with 7.5 watts. That is quite disappointing in 2024: many phones in this price range can charge much faster. The Pixel 8a, on the other hand, does benefit from Google’s excellent cameras (and software). The smartphone has three: a main camera, wide-angle lens and selfie camera.
