Last week it was announced that Prince Harry and his wife Meghan Markle had changed their primary residence from the United Kingdom to the United States. They have been living in Montecito, California for quite some time now. Royalty expert Tom Quinn explains in the British newspaper ‘The Mirror’: “The story about the official change of residence has emerged in recent days, but in fact Harry already quietly changed his primary residence on June 29, 2023 .” And he had good reason for that.
According to Quinn, the ‘irreparable’ rift with the British royal family was caused by Prince Harry being kicked out of Frogmore Cottage by his father Charles. “He had asked Harry and Meghan to leave after they stepped down from their royal duties in 2020.” For the Duke of Sussex this was “the last straw”. “Prince Harry thought this was a very vindictive move by his father. It made him furious and left him in tears,” says the royalty expert.
“Having to leave the Windsor estate was a real slap in the face for the Duke. But few people realize that. Harry felt that his father had no right to do so. Yet King Charles continued,” he said. “The Duke of Sussex also did not understand why stepping down from his royal duties was related to his stay at the royal residence.”
“Prince Harry saw it as a cruel rejection and a painful reminder of everything he felt when his father split from his mother in a long, painful divorce,” concluded Tom Quinn. “Every time Charles puts his foot down, Harry thinks it’s unfair. Because he believes that after everything that has happened to him, he is entitled to what he wants, whether it is financial security or a home in the UK.”
