Antwerp started the match against Club Brugge particularly fiercely, perhaps a little too fiercely even. Vincent Janssen wanted to put pressure on the blue-black players from the kick-off, with Raphael Onyedika somewhat blocking his way and the Dutch striker simply knocking over the Nigerian midfielder. Referee Jasper Vergoote immediately showed a yellow card. View the images below.

After the first half at Eleven DAZN, when it was still 0-0, Janssen was allowed to explain. “I was a bit excited,” said the Dutchman. “You want to get off to a good start straight away. But this wasn’t the best way, I know that myself. I was the first to be blocked. Then I wanted to give a block back, but I slipped. It was a bit too much. I let myself go a bit.”

“That set the tone,” said Club coach Nicky Hayen. “It was certainly not an assignment,” Antwerp coach Mark van Bommel added. “But you see it more. A block is placed (which Onyedika did, ed.) and there is a response to it. I’m not going to dedicate this to my players because not everyone can play 90 minutes without getting another card.”

Janssen thus received the fastest yellow card ever in the Jupiler Pro League. According to Eleven DAZN commentator Michael Van Vaerenbergh, the previous record was held by Felipe Abner of RWDM. The Brazilian defender was booked after seventeen seconds in the Brussels derby against Anderlecht for an arm in the face of Theo Leoni.

Some players received a yellow card after just three seconds, but that was after a substitute, which is less remarkable than after a kick-off as happened to Janssen.
