It took a while, but next Wednesday the time will come. Then Peter Sagan makes his debut for Pierre Baguette. The 34-year-old Slovak is in the selection of the Continental team for the Tour of Hungary (8-12 May).

Sagan ended his career at the highest level on the road at the end of last year, but can still be found regularly on the mountain bike. His big goal is to qualify for the upcoming Olympic Games. In the run-up to that, he was also supposed to drive several road races for the Slovenian team Pierre Baguette from March, but in February the driver’s heart problems came to light.

Sagan subsequently underwent cardiac ablation, a treatment used for serious heart disorders. The three-time world champion was then allowed to resume training, but that did not go smoothly. During a training ride in Marseille, his cardiac arrhythmias flared up again, after which new heart surgery proved necessary. He has been back on his bike since the beginning of April.

Next week we will see Sagan back in the race. In the Tour of Hungary he will meet some other big names, including Mark Cavendish and Dylan Groenewegen. It is not yet known what Sagan’s further program will look like.
