Why Club Brugge will play against Fiorentina tomorrow and only against Union on Monday | Sport

--

Striking: Club Brugge will play its second match against Fiorentina on Wednesday and not on Thursday evening, when the matches in the Conference League traditionally take place. This has everything to do with the Holy Blood Procession that will pass through the streets of Bruges on Thursday. And the next clash of blue and black in the Champions’ Play-offs, at home against Union, has also been postponed.

‘The match of the century’ is already being called Club – Fiorentina, with some exaggeration. A match that is exceptionally played on Wednesday evening (6:45 PM) and not on the usual Thursday. After all, the Holy Blood Procession is on the menu in Bruges that day. Who knows, maybe it will have an extra festive tint if blue-black qualified for the final of the Conference League a day earlier.

But combining Club – Fiorentina and the procession was an impossible task. “The Holy Blood Procession traditionally attracts a crowd of people to our city center,” says Mayor Dirk De fauw (CD&V) at the Krant van West-Vlaanderen. Fortunately for Bruges, UEFA agreed to that change. De fauw: “We are happy about that, because we want to prepare this historic event as best as possible. The stands for the Holy Blood Procession will already be set up on the Grote Markt and ‘t Zand will still be occupied by the Meifoor.”

The fans with Fiorentina – around 1,700 are expected – will be escorted tomorrow in shuttle buses from the Concertgebouw to the stadium at 5 p.m. The Ultras of ‘La Viola’ have a bad reputation. Bearing in mind the previous riots in and around Jan Breydel against PAOK and Benfica (last season), the police hope to ensure everything runs smoothly this time.

Club – Union Monday evening

And Club Brugge-Union also takes place on an exceptional day. Not this coming weekend, but on Monday evening at 8:30 PM. This is because the running race ‘Dwars door Brugge’ takes place on Sunday and the city of Bruges must deploy sufficient police officers there. These two events could therefore not be combined. That was already communicated from the start of the Champions’ Play-offs. Union will play the cup final against Antwerp on Thursday.
