Climbing in the Tour de Romandie. The riders were presented with the queen stage of the stage race on Saturday. Time for the classification men to throw their cards on the table. One of those riders is Ilan Van Wilder. After Friday’s time trial, our compatriot was in second place, seven seconds behind leader Juan Ayuso. An excellent opportunity to compete against the guns uphill in a ride of 152 kilometers.

Early in the stage a leading group emerged with six riders, but they quickly turned out to be a bird for the cat. In the peloton it was Ineos Grenadiers and UAE, the leader’s team, who quickly increased the pace and picked up the early escapees one by one.

Only the Frenchman Berthet remained at the foot of Leysin, the final climb of the day. He still had a lead of one and a half minutes over the peloton and held on for a long time. We had to wait for the classification men to launch their attack. Only five kilometers from the finish was the Frenchman caught by a thinned out group.

Ilan Van Wilder was initially still present in that pack of riders, but three kilometers from the top he still had to let the others ride ahead of him. Leader Ayuso also had to relinquish the role due to the exhausting work of Ineos. The Spaniard parked completely. The victory went to Olympic champion Richard Carapaz after an even more pressing sprint with Lipowitz.

Van Wilder ultimately finished seventh and dropped to fourth place in the general classification. Carlos Rodriguez is the new leader in the rankings. The final stage is scheduled for tomorrow.

The guns in the peloton prepare for the final climb and let Berthet ride alone for a while. His lead remains unchanged.
