After a year, Leicester City immediately returns to the Premier League. On Friday evening they secured promotion, although the Foxes did not even have to take action themselves. A scene that the club is very familiar with…

Let’s return to May 2, 2016. This Thursday marks exactly eight years since Leicester were turned upside down after one of the biggest stunts European club football has seen this century. Not one of the (financial) superpowers won the English title of the 2015/16 season, but the Foxes.

The party started when Claudio Ranieri’s team saw how the only remaining competitor Tottenham Hotspur, visiting outgoing champion Chelsea, could not get further than 2-2. The images of the outburst among the Leicester selection, which watched the match in a group at home with top scorer Jamie Vardy, soon went around the world.

This time too, Leicester – with Belgians Wout Faes and Dennis Praet – was allowed to celebrate without taking action themselves. After a heavy defeat by Leeds United visiting Queens Park Rangers (4-0), Leicester is assured of a place in the top two and therefore direct promotion. So, just like eight years ago, there was a big party for television.

The party also started on social media. Midfielder Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall was especially looking forward to it. ”Okay, who’s going out in Leicester tonight?”

So the roof went off on Friday evening, but Dewsbury-Hall and his teammates have to be careful not to party too fanatically. Leicester will play against Preston North End on Monday evening and can also secure the title after promotion. To achieve this, it still needs four points from its last two games.
