The facts occurred on Thursday morning around 7.40 am on the E314 near the Leuven exit. A 27-year-old man from Leuven deviated from his lane and ended up against the guardrail of the central reservation. Unfortunately, no further assistance could be provided to the driver. The man died on the spot. The police informed the Leuven public prosecutor’s office of the facts, which appointed a traffic expert to investigate the exact cause of the accident.

“There are no witnesses to the accident itself,” said spokeswoman for the public prosecutor’s office Sarah Callewaert. “After the car hit the guardrail, the vehicle catapulted to the other side of the road, according to the traffic expert. The investigation also shows that no other vehicle was involved in the accident and that the driver was not driving at excessive speed.” It is currently still unclear exactly how the accident could have happened. The dense fog in the morning may have played a role in this. “The man may have made a steering error or may have fallen asleep. Further research will have to reveal this. The traffic expert will further thoroughly investigate the car to determine the possible reason and circumstances of the accident.”

The accident caused some disruption and only one lane was available.
