A sixteen-year-old boy from the French department of Haute-Savoie, in the east of the country, has been charged with participation in terrorist criminal conspiracy and subsequently placed under judicial restriction of liberty. The French anti-terrorism public prosecutor’s office (PNAT) reported this.

He was arrested on Tuesday “as a result of his statements on social networks in which he expressed his desire to make a bomb belt to die as a martyr,” the PNAT told the French news agency AFP. The investigation, entrusted to the Central Directorate of Internal Security (DGSI), confirms “that the minor, who consulted jihadist propaganda, had indicated on social networks his will to commit a violent action,” PNAT said. .

The investigation continues to determine “whether the young man actually put his plans into practice by taking preparatory steps, which has not been established at this stage.”

On Wednesday, a police source confirmed to AFP that the young man had confessed to attempting to carry out a suicide bombing in La Défense, the French capital’s business district, during the Olympic Games.
