The walking paths on the Left Bank are given names after cartoon characters. There will be a Rode Ridder, Het Eiland Amoras and Lambikpad, among other things. These names help emergency services to find their way quickly.

According to district mayor Paul Cordy (N-VA), the choice of cartoon characters was obvious.

“Cartoon characters are absolutely in the DNA of every Flemish and every Antwerp resident,” says Cordy. “With well-known names such as Willy Vandersteen or Jef Nys, the city of Antwerp has made a major contribution to the art of comics.”

The names for these paths were an initiative of chair of the district council Marita Wuyts (N-VA). “If a path does not have a name, it is very difficult to make it clear to the emergency services where exactly they should be,” says Wuyts.

The “Slow Roads” project wants to encourage people to walk and exercise more. The so-called slow roads, roads where no motorized traffic passes and often located in a greener or pleasant walking environment, offer an excellent reason for this. The Left Bank has quite a few such roads. A first series of paths on the Left Bank will now be named, along with two locations on the Right Bank. The other paths will follow later. (svw)
