Gabriel Vanden Berghe and Sune De Valck provincial champion Flemish Brabant (photos)

The provincial championship of Flemish Brabant was held yesterday in Oetingen. The jerseys were for Gabriel Vanden Berghe (freshman) and Sune De Valck (sophomore).

“We rode the provincial championship of Flemish Brabant in Oetingen on a beautiful course with a lot of elevation gain. I had made this race a goal in advance. Especially after a series of podium places in recent weeks in the Belgian Cup competitions in Mouscron and Ghent- Wevelgem and last Wednesday the bronze medal at the BC Time Trials. So I went to the PK with good form.”

“I knew beforehand that the race was not easy to control because the first and second year students were in the race together and there were a few large blocks, including the Olympia Tienen team and the GMS Cycling Team Glabbeek team. Myself and Arne Vanderlinden were the only riders from our Van Moer Cycling Team at the start. That’s why I pushed up the pace on the climb in the first lap. In the third lap, 3 riders broke away, including one second year, Arifi Rayan, from REV team. I knew it was a strong rider. That’s why I took the initiative in the chase. It was not easy to overtake the 3 and for a moment I thought that the jersey was no longer feasible He was responsible for the first part of the climb and I was responsible for the second part. This brought us close to the leading group and we joined them on the descent, so everything was possible again at the top of the last climb, but When he was broken in, he did everything he could to give me the perfect lead-out. He dropped me nicely 300 meters from the finish and I was able to finish nicely in the sprint. There were only 2 riders from our team, but we played perfectly. This victory is gratifying. Now I hope to continue the good form because there are three important races coming up immediately with the Flemish Championship, De Diamond Classic Vorselaar and De Ronde Van Vlaanderen.”
