On Tuesday, September 26, 2023, the priest living in Kortrijk got off the train on platform 2 at the station of Oudenaarde in East Flanders around 1:33 p.m. He was there to visit a nun, as he often did by train.

On that fateful day, he is spotted by a young man, probably around 18 years old, who takes an unusual interest in his leather briefcase. The suspect follows the priest for about ten minutes to Stationsstraat and then roughly pulls the bag out of the priest’s hands. “I was attacked in the back by that young man. He pushed me to the ground,” Herman says in the search program Farouk. “But I defended myself.”

Herman doesn’t let go and is dragged along the ground, causing the bag to rip and the priest to suffer injuries to his bleeding knees and hands. His costume is also torn in several places. The suspect then flees on a folding bicycle. Only when he notices a few blocks away that there is nothing of value in the bag does he throw them away. Herman has now got them back.

Suspect wanted

The police have now distributed the images taken by the surveillance cameras. “The suspect is approximately 1.80 meters tall, thin and has short dark hair and a mustache. He wore a red football shirt of the Arsenal football team and rode a black folding bicycle,” the police said in the investigation report.

“I want to forgive him,” the priest continues. “But he can pay back my debts, because it cost me something, the urgency and all. I have calculated it all. He still owes me 80 euros. That’s the least.”
