A new study shows that 0.3% of primary school students have to go to school with an empty lunch box. “This is something that makes me very angry. That people are making such a joke about this. And this is why I very clearly want to get back into politics,” says Conner Rousseau in a video message.

“Many teachers tell me that they are devastated to see that so many young people and children are not given decent food to school. A new study also says that 10% of young people are occasionally hungry at school. “

Cold pizza and cold fries

“That’s not possible, is it? I can’t live with that. And a right-wing journalist in HLN or Minister Crevits who say: ‘That’s not bad, it’s just about small figures.’ But really? It is not possible that in a rich region like Flanders there are still children who have no food at school or have to make do with cold pizza or cold fries in their lunch box.”

“That is bad for their health, bad for their educational capacity, that is bad for all of us. For Vooruit it is important that we do something about child poverty. Because that is what it is about. That we do something about equal opportunities. Because that is what it is about. And that we start with the simplest thing there is: ensuring that all our children have a decent meal every day, including at school.”
