Tongeren

On Saturday morning, a resident of the Nieuw Tongeren district left a trail of vandalism. She damaged at least sixteen parked cars. Windshield wipers, exterior mirrors, antennas and license plates had to be replaced.

The Nieuw Tongeren district was once again shocked by a calamity. This time, at least sixteen parked cars suffered the consequences on Sint-Jozefsplein, Radiostraat, Henisstraat and VNiënlaan. The offenses were committed on Saturday morning between 4 and 5 am by a woman who lives in the neighborhood. “At 4.30 am I heard a ‘crack’ in the street. I raised the shutter and saw that someone was tinkering with the parked cars,” says Freddy Seuntjens. He then puts on his dressing gown and slippers, but when he comes outside, the perpetrator is missing. Freddy inspects his car and discovers that the windshield wiper has broken off the rear window. “I heard another ‘crack’ in the distance and saw that someone was working on cars again in Radiostraat. I shouted and then she started walking.”

Freddy had meanwhile alerted the police. A little later he and the police started looking for damaged cars in the area. 14 ‘victims’ were spotted with a broken windshield wiper or double-folded license plate. The perpetrator can be seen on camera images from a local resident. In the morning, Freddy goes for a walk with his dogs and he sees a man standing by a car in the Statenlaan. Freddy sees that there is a car antenna in the mailbox. He speaks to the man and he tells him that it was his ex.

“She broke off a wing mirror and the antenna of my car and the same with my mother’s,” the man said. Freddy had passed on a description of the perpetrator to the police: “It was a slim figure in high heels and with a small backpack. I thought she was wearing a red hat, but it turned out to be someone with red and blonde hair who lives nearby,” says Freddy.
