A serious fire broke out in a house in the Van Daelstraat in Borgerhout on Thursday afternoon. The fire was accompanied by a plume of black smoke, but is now under control. The fire brigade asks local residents to keep windows and doors closed.
The fire started around 5 p.m. According to local residents, a loud bang was also heard shortly afterwards. The fire was accompanied by a thick plume of black smoke that was visible far into the city.
The Antwerp Zone Fire Department immediately arrived on scene with several teams to tackle the fire. Confirmation came shortly after 5:30 p.m. that the fire was under control. “We will remain on site with a few teams to ventilate and check whether everything is safe,” says spokesperson Ninke Neirynck of the Antwerp Fire Department Zone.
It is not yet clear how the fire could have started. It is not yet known whether there are any injuries. “The smoke plume is visible from far away. Do you live near here? Close your windows and doors. Are you passing by car? Turn off ventilation,” says the fire brigade.
More soon.
