Fire brigade extinguishes fire at company at exit E314 in Lummen (Lummen)

A fire broke out at the Office 26 company on the industrial estate at the E314 exit in Lummen on Saturday afternoon. A large electrical box caught fire and the three-story building suffered extensive smoke damage.

The company with ready-to-use offices from 500 m² is located between Bosstraat and Ringlaan. The South West Limburg fire brigade received the call at 3.30 pm. “It was the owner of the company who had received a fire alarm and was immediately on site. He notified the emergency services,” says Captain Bert Ceyssens. “On the ground floor, an electrical box measuring 2 by 1 meter was on fire. That large cupboard is completely burned out. The fire had also spread into the adjacent room and that room burned down completely.”

“We deployed from Herk-de-Stad and Beringen with major resources: two pump trucks, a ladder truck and a tanker, good for 22 firefighters. We fought the fire as quickly as possible. After the fire was extinguished, we noticed that a lot of smoke had spread throughout the building. We ventilated the company, which has three floors, until just after 5 p.m. We opened a lot of windows and used a fan inside and one at the entrance of the building.”

Fire detection system

“No smoke damage was found in the large basement of the building because that area was properly closed off. Once again it became clear that a good fire detection system is very important. When we arrived at a fire a few years ago, the flames were often already shooting out of the roof. Thanks to the fire detectors, which are also very important and inexpensive in ordinary homes, we are less confronted with devastating fires,” concludes Captain Ceyssens.

An hour and a half after the fire started, there was still a strong burning smell inside and around the company. After the fire was extinguished, a decontamination container was also brought to the scene so that the firefighters could change clothes on site.
