In the port area, almost all level crossings are secured with flashing lights and a bell, but without barriers. The Dutch driver of a tanker apparently did not notice the signals. According to witnesses, he drove through a red light at high speed while a train was approaching. It hit the semi-trailer in the side, after which the truck was thrown away and spun around its axis.

Two drivers who were waiting on the other side of the crossing saw the colossus coming towards them but were unable to leave. A BMW suffered the worst blow. The driver was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

A Volkswagen was also hit, but the driver was unharmed. Both cars were a total loss and had to be towed. Fortunately, the truck’s tank turned out to be empty.
