Antwerp’s Strategic Spatial Plan is submitted to the city council

--

The Antwerp Strategic Spatial Plan (SRA) describes the urban vision of Antwerp’s urban development until 2040. It contains the outlines for urban and spatial developments in that period. The council now decided to submit the final draft of this SRA to the municipal council for approval. If everything goes according to plan, it will come into effect at the end of July.

The urban fabric of Antwerp has undergone many changes over the centuries. This will continue to happen in the future. Because the available space is limited, the Antwerp Strategic Spatial Plan sets the guidelines for new urban development developments with this long-term vision of the city on space use.

Vibrant residential city, smart network city and resilient landscape

The SRA replaces the current strategic Spatial Structure Plan Antwerp (s-RSA), which dates from 2006. After a long preliminary process with city debates in the period 2016 – 2018, the project team was appointed. That team developed the draft of the SRA, which the municipal council provisionally adopted in September 2023.

Because Antwerp has the ambition to be the most liveable city in Flanders, the Antwerp Strategic Spatial Plan focuses on 3 themes: vibrant residential city, resilient landscape and smart network city.

Alderman for spatial planning and urban development Annick De Ridder: “With the Antwerp Strategic Spatial Plan we are setting the guidelines for the future spatial policy of our city. With a time horizon of 2040, we are further developing the city sustainably as a particularly dynamic and innovative residential and working city. and a wonderful place to be. With the SRA we are taking a Smart Spatial Ambitious look at the city of tomorrow. In terms of urban development and spatial planning, this sets the direction for the coming decades.”

Subareas

The SRA defines seven sub-areas, each with its own spatial identity:

  • Scheldt sub-area
  • Sub-area Ringstad and Ringparken
  • Sub-area Canal Zone (around the Albert Canal)
  • Sub-area Intra muros (within the Ring)
  • Sub-area Left Bank
  • Sub-area 20th century belt (outside the Ring)
  • Sub-area Northern districts (Ekeren and Berendrecht-Zandvliet-Lillo)
