Cian Uijtdebroeks won the white youth jersey on Sunday after the first finish at the top of the Giro. At Visma-Lease a Bike, however, they remain very down-to-earth.
For Cian Uijtdebroeks it was a milestone in his young career. He took the white youth jersey for the first time in a big tour. Perhaps the first of many, because in the coming days it will be the sprinters’ turn in the Giro.
Uijtdebroeks already has a lead of 44 seconds over Frenchman Alex Baudin and 48 seconds ahead of Mauri Vansevenant. Top favorite Thymen Arensman follows more than three minutes behind Uijtdebroeks.
White jersey Uijtdebroeks not a target for Visma-Lease a Bike
“My first jersey in a Grand Tour. Wow. I initially thought it was a miscalculation,” Uijtdebroeks responded enthusiastically. HLN. However, there was much less euphoria among his Visma-Lease a Bike team.
“The white jersey is a goal? No!”, said sports director Addy Engels. “We want to achieve the best possible ranking with Cian, but that is also a secondary goal. The primary goal is to win stages. During the Giro we will see whether we need to adjust those goals.”
Still, Engels was satisfied with Uijtdebroeks’ performance. “We knew Cian was in good shape, but fourth place after the opening weekend is unexpected. We will try to help him as best as possible in his classification ambition.”
