24-year-old Louise from Zwijndrecht will have to stay in jail for a month longer. Last Monday she stabbed her boyfriend Dimitri Van den Borre (36) to death after an argument that got out of hand. The couple had already had a turbulent relationship until then and Dimitri was even homeless for a while.

The facts occurred on Monday evening around 11 p.m. in a flat on the first floor of a complex of social apartments in Prins Leopoldstraat in Burcht. There, an argument between the couple escalated into a fight in which Louise stabbed her boyfriend in the chest. The 24-year-old woman called the emergency services herself, but 36-year-old Dimitri Van den Borre died on the spot from his injuries. The woman was arrested and the public prosecutor’s office ordered an investigating judge for manslaughter. The victim had only lived in the flat for a good month after being homeless for a while.

Turbulent relationship

Dimitri and Louise had a turbulent history. The couple lived together in Bruges for several years and they also have two children aged two and three. However, they have now been placed with a foster family. “Dimi left her two years ago,” say his niece Silvy De Coninck and her husband Yannick Huybrechts. “He lived on the street for a long time and eventually ended up in a squat in Antwerp where he lived for almost a year. Later, Dimi wanted to get his life back on track. He was finally allocated an apartment last month,” it continues. “Unfortunately, at that time he contacted his ex again. We advised him against that as the relationship had ended badly, but the love was too great.”

It is therefore a mystery to Dimi’s family how things could escalate so suddenly. “They both had a whole bunch of problems and they may have smoked a joint every now and then, but there was no problem with drug use. They didn’t have the money for that either. Although we didn’t think it was a healthy relationship, we never thought Louise would be capable of something like that. She had previously received psychiatric treatment, but we don’t think there had ever been violence between the two before. What caused that argument is currently unknown to us.”

“Manipulative and violent”

Yet his ex-partner Vicky has a completely different image of the victim. According to her, there is a pattern in the relationships of Dimitri Van den Borre (36). “He mainly chose women who were in a very weak position. Louise, who now killed him, had mental problems, something that he only reinforced and even ended up in an institution. I met him 15 years ago, also at a difficult moment in my life.

After the break with Vicky, Dimitri completely lost the reins and ended up on the street. “And also a few times in prison,” his ex says. His new girlfriend Louise suddenly contacted Vicky one day. “She had also become acquainted with his dark side and came to ask for advice.”

“Dimitri was a great manipulator but also a control freak and sickly jealous. I wasn’t allowed to wear makeup, have a cell phone or contact my parents. I became completely isolated during our relationship. Only when he realized that he had gone too far could he suddenly come out of the corner. We had a toxic relationship for seven years, of which I and the children still suffer the consequences.”
