The census also shows that the average household in Belgium has 2.3 people. 26.9 percent of Belgians are couples with children, 25.4 percent are couples without children. 9.8 percent are single parents and 35 percent of households are single-person households, people who live alone.

The percentage of single-person households is largest in some Brussels municipalities, such as Ixelles (61%), Etterbeek (56.8%) and Sint-Gillis (54.7%). The province of Limburg has the fewest single-person households (29.3%).

(Correction: an earlier version of this article stated that 35 percent of Belgians live alone, but this concerns 35 percent of households in Belgium. That is not the same, since on average 2.3 people live in a household. Suppose : er are 100 households in Belgium. Of these, 35% are single-person households. So 35 people live alone. But for easy calculations, 2 people live in the other 65 households. So a total of 130 people. The number of people living alone in this example is not 35%, but 21%.)
