After the serious fire at the butcher’s shop and caterer’s shop Gybels in Dorp in Bonheiden on Sunday evening, the roadway has been reopened to traffic since Monday morning. The fire brigade is still on site to extinguish the fire. The affected building has been completely destroyed.

The intense fire broke out around 8 p.m. on Sunday evening and spread rapidly. The fire reduced the studio and shop to ashes. Several homes in the area were evacuated during the fire-fighting efforts. “The residents were taken care of at Klimop primary school, but were allowed to return home a little later after the fire brigade declared their homes safe after CO measurements,” explains Mayor Lode Van Looy (BR30). “Six local residents were overcome by smoke and were taken to hospital for evaluation. Not much later they were allowed to leave the hospital again.”

After about four hours of extinguishing the fire, the fire brigade had the fire under control, but the fire still had to be extinguished for hours afterwards. “During the night, a crane removed the roof of the company to combat the smoldering more quickly and to avoid further danger of collapse. The rear facade collapsed in a controlled manner, but this did cause some damage to an adjacent building. There was no asbestos in the building,” the mayor added.

Soot layer

Local residents who notice that there is a layer of soot on their car or terrace, or even notice that there is soot on the vegetables from the garden, should not panic. “A layer of soot can be removed with simple soapy water. If the vegetables from the garden are rinsed well, they can also be consumed perfectly.”

A burning smell may still be noticeable in the area in the coming days. The mayor advises the council to thoroughly ventilate the homes in the area.

The cause of the huge fire is still unknown. Today the forensic laboratory and possibly also a fire expert will arrive on site for an investigation.
