An ambulance was shot at with flares at the church of Mazenzele (Opwijk). No one was injured, but the paramedics and the patient were deeply impressed by the facts.

The ambulance left for Merchtem shortly before midnight on Saturday evening. “When the ambulance, with the patient and an attendant on board, was on its way to the hospital in Asse, the paramedics were shot at with flares near the church of Mazenzele,” says Wouter Jeanfils of the Flemish Brabant West fire zone. “At least one flare struck the ambulance, causing minor damage to the vehicle.”

Legal action

None of the occupants were injured, but according to Jeanfils everyone was very impressed by the facts.

“The ambulance driver who was sitting in the back with the patient even thought that the ambulance had had a collision, the bang was so loud,” says the spokesperson for the Flemish Brabant West Fire Zone.

The fire zone takes the facts seriously and will consider possible legal action in the coming days. “We do not accept any form of aggression against our employees and strongly condemn any act of senseless violence,” said zone commander Tom Van Esbroeck. (CVH, TG)
