In Ostend, a fire broke out on Thursday evening at the Zeeparking in the city center. Four cars were damaged, two of which were completely burned out. No one was injured.
Ablaze
The fire started around 9 p.m. in the so-called Zeeparking, which is the public parking lot between the Leopold Park and the De Grote Post cultural center in the heart of Ostend. It was a passer-by who noticed flames at the bottom of one of the vehicles and immediately notified the fire brigade. (Read more below the photo)

When the fire brigade arrived quickly, two cars were ablaze. It immediately became clear that reinforcement would not be an unnecessary luxury. The fire brigade eventually got the fire under control relatively quickly, but the damage to at least three vehicles was extensive. Two parked vehicles were completely burned out and are ready for the scrap heap. A light truck parked next to the two burning vehicles was severely damaged. Another passenger car was parked on the other side. It suffered minor damage.
Suspected arson
The police closed the Zeeparking so that the emergency services could work safely. It is still unclear how the fire could have started. The police have already opened an investigation. Arson cannot be ruled out. There are many camera images available in the city center. Presumably, the police will be able to use these images to determine whether there was malicious intent in the fire. The damaged vehicles will eventually be towed.
The public prosecutor’s office was informed and confirmed that a fire expert had been appointed to investigate the circumstances of the fire.
