Human remains were found along the Scheldt in Waarmaarde, a sub-municipality of Avelgem, on Thursday morning. A cyclist found an arm near the towpath. The public prosecutor’s office is investigating the grisly discovery.

The cyclist was on his way to work on Thursday morning when he came across the human remains just before eight o’clock. In concrete terms, it concerns a shoulder, arm and hand of an unknown person for the time being. The public prosecutor’s office arrived on site with a medical examiner and the laboratory to examine the find.

“We are working hard to find out the identity of the victim,” says Tom Janssens of the Kortrijk public prosecutor’s office. “There was still a wedding ring on the hand. The Missing Persons Unit is also informed. At the location of the find, the current of the Scheldt is very strong and the river flows into our country from France. We are therefore also investigating a possible link with a disappeared person in France.”

The arm was found on the towpath, but according to the public prosecutor’s office it is clear that it was previously in the water. A route in which the body part was dumped there does not seem likely. The investigators are working with their colleagues in France and Wallonia to investigate the identity of the victim. It is not yet clear whether foul play is involved.
