The 17-year-old student was visiting the European Parliament in Brussels together with his school DuO²-Gent. Because the teenager participates in Ramadan and therefore does not eat during the day, he went into town during the lunch break, together with another student of Turkish origin (16). A pro-Kurdish demonstration was taking place there at the time. When some demonstrators noticed the two young people, they were asked if they were Turkish. When the two answered in the affirmative, they were punched and injured.

The news from Brussels apparently also reached Turkish President Erdogan, who personally called the 17-year-old victim a day later. During the telephone conversation, he asked about his health and wished him a speedy recovery. Erdogan condemned the attack and called the perpetrators “immoral and despicable villains”. “The official authorities there and our embassy are monitoring the situation,” he urged the young man.

According to the boy’s father, his son is still in shock after the attack and has suffered injuries to his eyes and ears. “It is very nice that the president takes the time to call us, although I first and foremost hope that my son will recover quickly,” the father said. HLN.

Tensions between the Turkish and Kurdish communities in our country increased last week when supporters of the PKK, the Kurdish Workers’ Party, are on the European Union’s terrorist list because of their violence. Heavy riots broke out in Heusden-Zolder on Sunday after PKK supporters provoked Turks in the Koolmijnlaan in the Limburg municipality and injured a man of Turkish origin. On Monday afternoon, a pro-Kurdish demonstration got out of hand and a brawl broke out on Luxemburgplein in Brussels. The police had to clear the square.
