The two residential towers of the high-rise complex The Grace in The Hague will not be as high as planned. The highest tower will be lowered from 180 to 150 meters and the lower tower will go from 153 to 105 meters. The towers designed by Mecanoo near Hollands Spoor station would become the two tallest buildings in The Hague.

According to councilor Robert van Asten (urban development), the developer is suffering from ‘deteriorating market conditions such as construction and interest costs’. The project has been delayed and therefore the plans are being adjusted.

Because both towers will be lower, fewer homes can be built there. That number goes from 1411 to 1300. The complex will have fewer homes for the open market, mid-range rental and social rental. What is new is that there should also be 240 homes for students in the towers.

The Hague now has approximately 565,000 inhabitants and is expected to have approximately 620,000 to 630,000 inhabitants in about fifteen years. There is no room for large new residential areas in the city, so the municipality wants to build high towers around the Hollands Spoor, Central Station and Laan van NOI stations. The Hague wants to build two other towers of 160 meters close to Hollands Spoor.

The highest towers in The Hague are now the two buildings of the Ministries of the Interior and of Justice and Security. Both are 146 meters high. The Hoftoren of the Ministry of Education is 142 meters high. The tallest residential tower in the Netherlands is the 215-meter-high Zalmhaven Tower in Rotterdam.
