The province of Flemish Brabant and the municipality of Sint-Genesius-Rode have carried out erosion control works at Krechtenbroeklaan. These works should reduce water and mud nuisance.

To combat water and mud nuisance, the municipality of Sint-Genesius-Rode has created an erosion pool on the edge of a field near Krechtenbroeklaan and Seringenlaan. The agricultural plot that largely causes the nuisance is very sensitive to erosion. On several occasions, the run-off water caused erosion channels in the fields. During heavy rainfall, water and mud flowed from the field via a canal between the gardens of homes on Krechtenbroeklaan to Bevrijdingslaan. This caused damage to private property in Krechtenbroeklaan, Seringenlaan and Openluchtlaan. Because that canal could not swallow the influx of water and mud. Water and mud also ended up in the sewers, which came under pressure.

“We have repeatedly had to deal with flooding in Bevrijdingslaan, on the corner with Krechtenbroeklaan. Mud and water flowed off the agricultural lands located on the border with Linkebeek. Five to six homes directly experienced nuisance and damage as a result. In addition, the lower parts of our municipality also had to process a lot of water during heavy rainfall,” says Miguel Delacroix, alderman of public works in Sint-Genesius-Rode. “To combat this nuisance, the municipality constructed an earthen dam on the field edge that temporarily buffers the run-off water. The mud carried along settles on the agricultural plot and the collected water can also infiltrate on site. The buffer can gradually empty via a pinch pipe through the dam. Only during heavy rain showers will there be water in the fields,” says Bart Nevens, deputy for waterways.

The cost of the works is estimated at 117,000 euros. The province of Flemish Brabant provides a subsidy of 15,000 euros, i.e. 15%, with a maximum amount of 15,000 euros per project. The Flemish Government provides a subsidy of 75%. The works are done in collaboration with the farmer and with respect for agriculture and nature. “This is already the eighth erosion pond that we are creating in collaboration with the province,” says councilor Miguel Delacroix. “We are very satisfied with the successful collaboration.” The erosion pool that was constructed last year on the Kwadebeek already proved its usefulness a few weeks ago. Because after heavy rainfall a large amount of mud ended up in it. mud nuisance. For this we count on the voluntary commitment of farmers and owners of agricultural plots. We are pleased with this constructive collaboration to prevent water and mud nuisance,” concludes deputy Bart Nevens.
