Owners and enthusiasts of vintage cars gathered on the Left Bank on Sunday afternoon to protest against Antwerp’s low emission zone (LEZ). They find it incomprehensible that their cars are not exempt.
Since the introduction of the LEZ in 2017, owners of vintage cars have had to purchase a day pass to enter the area within the Singel and the Scheldt. In addition, there is a limit of twelve day passes. This is not to the liking of the enthusiasts of these cars.
“I live in the LEZ myself and have thirteen vintage cars,” says Dirk Van den Berghe. “So when I leave the garage, I am already in violation or I had to take a day pass. This means I can of course quickly get through my twelve day passes per year. This is not acceptable. We argue in favor of simply exempting cars from the conditions of the LEZ from a certain age.”
It was no coincidence that the owners of the vintage cars gathered on the Katwilgweg on the Left Bank. This is just outside the LEZ. Among those present was also Antwerp’s honorary mayor Bob Cools (Vooruit) with his jeep. In addition, there were representatives of Vlaams Belang and PVDA at this event. (svw)
