Queen Camilla present during Royal Maundy Service

--

Queen Camilla will today attend the Royal Maundy Service at Worcester Cathedral on behalf of her husband King Charles. The king will not be present at the service this year, but will share an emotional audio message today.

On Maundy Thursday, Maundy Thursday in English, the British monarch attends a church service every year. The service has special significance for the late Queen Elizabeth II and King Charles. With a “pain in the heart”, King Charles must cancel his service this year due to the cancer treatment he is undergoing. His wife, Queen Camilla, is making history today by – as far as is known – being the first queen consort to lead this age-old tradition that dates back to the year 600.

Traditional

Queen Camilla arrives at Worcester Cathedral on Thursday morning. There she is greeted by officials who traditionally offer her a small bouquet. The British Queen then hands out to the 75 invited men and 75 invited women a coin of one, two, three or four pence, specially made for the service. The symbolic gift is presented to thank the recipients for their contributions to the churches and communities. Here you can read more information about the content of the church service.

Messages of support for Catherine

In addition to King Charles, Catherine, the Princess of Wales, is also undergoing treatment for cancer. Earlier this week, Queen Camilla received many gifts and messages of support for her daughter-in-law. The Queen said Catherine “will be delighted” after receiving the many posters from well-wishers. She was photographed greeting the public during her outing and was even given a rose at one point. She has also been holding a sign that reads “Send our love to Kate“, offering further support to her daughter-in-law.
