“The Prince and Princess have both been hugely touched by the kind messages from people here in the UK, across the Commonwealth and around the world, in response to Her Royal Highness’s message,” a spokesperson for the couple said. “They are deeply touched by the warmth and support and are grateful for their understanding of their request for privacy at this time.”
In addition to messages of support from their own family and other royals, the public also seems to be supporting the two en masse. The Instagram video in which Kate announced her cancer treatment has already been liked by more than 4.7 million people at the time of writing this piece.
Catherine, 42, is currently undergoing preventive chemotherapy. The disease came to light after her planned abdominal surgery in January. Kensington Palace has not reported what type of cancer it is.
Polite warning
We should not expect more details about Princess Kate’s diagnosis or treatment in the short term, says the British public broadcaster BBC. The past few weeks have been tough for the couple, their three children and the entourage. All struggled with a rumor mill that was running at full speed.
The BBC therefore regards Kate and William’s message as a word of thanks but also as a polite warning: now that the diagnosis is known, the couple and their children want to be left alone. There are no public moments with the family planned in the coming weeks.
The couple will therefore not be present at the church service on Easter Sunday in St. George’s Chapel in Windsor, normally a regular event for the royals. But perhaps King Charles will lead the rest of the family to church. Buckingham Palace says they are “hopeful” Charles can be with the family next weekend.
