Although the warm months are coming our way, it still remains quite chilly in our cold little country. It is therefore no surprise that we still suffer from dry skin to this day. And then you can apply products until you weigh an ounce, but that is no longer enough. Dry skin can also be related to what you eat and drink.

Dry skin

“Cold weather outside and dry heat inside can cause your skin to become dry,” explains certified dermatologist Dr. Whitney Bowe off on Huffpost. “And if you already have dry skin due to heredity or health problems, you are even more vulnerable to dry skin in the winter, for example.”

But those are not the only reasons why you may suffer from dry skin. Food and drink can also have a major influence on dehydration. It is therefore important that you know what you eat and drink. Huffpost spoke to several experts to find out exactly how that works.

Caffeine

First of all, drinks containing caffeine can cause dry skin. You probably don’t expect this so quickly, as it is usually assumed that the water in the drinks compensates for the drying effects. Especially if you drink something with caffeine in the evening, this can cause the skin to dry out. This is partly because it can affect your sleep.

“Just one night of poor sleep can show up on our skin,” Bowe explains. “For example, this can cause reduced skin hydration, but also accelerated skin aging and dark circles.”

Alcohol

Alcohol also has a major influence on the hydration of our skin. For example, it works as a diuretic, which means that you lose a lot of water because you have to urinate more often. If you do this excessively, it can cause general dehydration, including for your skin. Bowe explains: “Drinking alcohol also depletes your natural antioxidants, making your skin more susceptible to damage, such as dirt and UV rays. In addition, alcohol – like caffeine – can disrupt your sleep.”

Added sugars

“We eat a lot of added sugar. It’s everywhere,” explains dietitian Sue-Ellen Anderson-Haynes out. “If you consume too much of this, you are actually damaging your body’s process of repairing and producing collagen. Collagen is essential for the elasticity and health of your skin.” According to Anderson-Haynes, it is important to keep an eye on how much sugar you consume.

Fried food

Finally, fried foods are also a major cause of dry skin. This is because it causes inflammation, which can be linked to dehydration. “Dehydration can lead to redness and itching, and may be associated with skin inflammation,” says Anderson-Haynes. She therefore recommends baking your food or using an air fryer.
