Ed Sheeran gave the song Love Yourself to colleague Justin Bieber, because his friends were not impressed. The British singer-songwriter said this last weekend during a concert in Los Angeles.

Sheeran played the song for some friends shortly after writing it. He sums up their reaction as “meh.” Sheeran then played the song for Bieber, who decided he wanted it. “I said, ‘Cool, take it.’ And then it got really big,” Sheeran said, laughing.

Bieber scored a huge hit in 2016 with Love Yourself. The Canadian topped the US Billboard Top 100 for the entire year. Bieber is the youngest artist to achieve that.

Because of that success, Sheeran’s friends asked why he had given the song away in the first place, the singer also said during the concert. The Brit then explained to them that it was their fault.

Because Sheeran is the writer of the song, he is allowed to sing it during performances.
