After more than a hundred years, the baking tradition of the Geebelen family comes to an end. At the end of June, Jo (62), the last baker, will close the doors of his business in Stationstraat in Genk.

Luc Geebelen is now 90 years old. He does not know when his father started a bakery. But it must have been over 100 years ago. In 1949, Luc was forced to take over the business when his father died, only to pass the torch on to his son Jo in 1978. He now stops due to a lack of family succession. The last pastries, waffles and cakes will go on sale on June 30. A regrettable event, according to the loyal clientele. Because Geebelen bakery has grown over the years into a household name in Genk and far beyond. Their pastries in particular were very popular. Specialties such as the Mont Blanc (a profiterole with chocolate mousse and icing sugar) attracted customers from all over the world. Even on the coast…

What Jo Geebelen will do in the future? “No idea, probably spend more time in the sun,” he laughs in Het Belang van Limburg. (You can read the whole story here).
