Ex-‘Top Gear’ presenter James May criticizes woke movement: “Older white man is immediately written off and unworthy” | Celebrities

--

celebritiesFormer ‘Top Gear’ presenter James May (61) has never been a fan of the woke movement. Even more, he believes it has hindered his career, as he previously told the media. In the podcast ‘Who We Are Now’, by colleague Richard Hammond and his daughter, May elaborates: according to him, men like him have a “bad reputation” and are quickly “written off”.

“Is the modern man in trouble?” That is the key question May is asked in the podcast. May doesn’t think so, because according to him the world rarely goes to waste. The ‘Top Gear’ presenter thinks that men have been getting a bad reputation lately, partly due to the ‘woke’ movement. Nowadays, he says, if you’re an older, white, middle-class man, you’re written off almost immediately. “Not all men are like that,” the former presenter emphasizes in the podcast.

May’s opinion comes after Hammond last year defended the “macho” behavior that critics of ‘Top Gear’ and ‘The Grand Tour’ had attributed to May, Hammond and their co-host Jeremy Clarkson. It did make him think. “Did I behave toxically in the programs? Don’t know.” Hammond’s daughter Izzy certainly doesn’t think so.

It used to be much easier, according to TV faces. “There used to be no boundaries, but they were clearer and less broad,” May concludes. Yet May doesn’t care too much about it all. Although he realizes that he is too old to present a modern version of ‘Top Gear’. “We knew we had to stop at some point and unfortunately that day has come.”
