Just when actress Anne Hathaway was allowed to play a pregnant woman in a play, she had a real-life miscarriage. She testified about this for the first time.

The famous film star has now given birth to two healthy boys. But nine years ago her world came crashing down when she had a miscarriage. It was during the period when she was in the play Grounded. “There was a scene in which I had to pretend I was giving birth in every performance,” she reflects. “A tough scene, and just then I had lost my unborn child. It was very difficult mentally to pretend that nothing was wrong every time. I did that every night for six weeks straight. No one knew then what was going on in my private life.

Barely a year later, Hathaway was pregnant again with son Jonathan. “But that dark period has made me very empathetic to people who also have problems with fertility or who have suffered a miscarriage. I was once on their side and know what they are going through. I know what it feels like to lose your child, something you wanted so much, and the question of guilt that then bubbles up. Because even though you can’t do anything about it, you still wonder if you did anything wrong.”

Ultimately, Hathaway became pregnant another time. “But that pregnancy did not go smoothly either.”(tove)
