At least three messages on Facebook claim that NMBS offers a gift card for just two euros to all travelers who complete a questionnaire. With this card you could travel for free throughout Belgium for a whole year.

In the comments, several people claim that the message is correct. Provided with a photo, they claim to have received the card. However, the reports are false. Through these types of messages, scammers try to obtain banking information from their victims. A similar message is also circulating about the Dutch Railways.

“Trust only official communications”

The NMBS therefore warns its travelers not to respond to the messages. “NMBS would like to warn about this and asks its travelers to only rely on communication through its official channels.” The railway company also asks travelers never to share personal information or bank details with these types of offers.

For those who have doubts about a message, Bart Crols, spokesperson for the NMBS, gives the following advice: “Be careful if the communication is unexpected or irrelevant, or if the offer seems unlikely or unusual.” In addition, NMBS will never request personal information on a web page that is not secure.

According to the spokesperson, the railway company has already filed a complaint with the competent authorities and social media channels, but the messages continue to circulate.
