Campuses in the United States have been occupied for several weeks by students who are denouncing the violence in Gaza, and this has now happened in Belgium. Before the meeting of the board of directors on Friday afternoon, the students of End Fossil Gent and Ghent Students for Palestine had already taken up positions at the UFO. They stood there in silent protest, as a symbol of the silence of Ghent University.

Was on the table during that board of directors: a proposal not to conclude any further collaborations with Israeli organizations. A proposal that was made by its own human rights committee, but which the council rejected. This is what UGent professor Koen Bogaert, affiliated with the Faculty of Political and Social Sciences, said on happening on our screens, our social media and in the press. (…) They are now once again ignored by a Board that excels in silence.”

The student coalition had announced that they would occupy Ghent University for two days if the university did not respond to their list of demands. Van de Walle has already stated that he will not approve the occupation of the buildings.
